English as a Second Language/Migrant Resource Teacher

 

Reports To:

Administrator of Multilingual/Migrant Services 

 

Job Goal(s):

The primary job goal of the Migrant/English Language Learner Resource Teacher is to provide supplementary instruction for migrant students and English as a Second Language instruction for English language learners in assigned district(s).  

ESL teachers are to assist in implementing the Language Assistance Plan of the assigned district(s). The secondary goal for this position is to provide academic, social, and emotional support services to migrant and ESL students and their families as necessary to promote success within the educational setting and increase student and family engagement.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Education:

A bachelor's degree in education required 

 

Certification:

Michigan teaching certificate with an endorsement in elementary education is preferred and either a bilingual endorsement in Spanish or an endorsement in English as a Second Language required 

 

OR 

 

Willingness to get the endorsement in the next 3 years (must be enrolled in a program within one year of employment).

 

 

Work Experience:

A minimum of one year of experience working with disadvantaged children is preferred 

 

Skills:

 

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Identify potential migrant students in the school district and refer them to the Program Administrator for recruitment. Provide instructional services to identified migrant students in the assigned school district and complete a priority for service form for each migrant student at least once a year.
  2. Identify all potential English as a Second Language students in the assigned district. Assist with the assessment of English language proficiency for new/returning students in accordance with the Michigan Department of Education Entrance and Exit Protocol for English Language Learners and district procedures.
  3. Assist with the annual WIDA assessment of all English Language Learners enrolled in the assigned school district during the assessment window.  Meet with local district administrators to review assessment results, review the district’s Language Assistance Plan, and exit and/or re-enter students based upon their annual assessment results and MDE Entrance/Exit protocol of ELLs.
  4. Demonstrate effective instructional practices for planning and organizing instruction that supports the core curriculum delivered in the district and is appropriate for migrant and ESL students.
  5. Monitor and document student progress and provide evidence of student growth, or the lack thereof, on individual goals, behavior, and the district  Language Assistance Plan.
  6. Contact migrant and ESL parents, promote communications between them and district staff, and assist families in accessing community resources and agencies that benefit students’ needs.
  7. Submit a daily time study (PARs) to the program administrator, completed biweekly, of the names of students served and their learning targets for that time period. Maintain and provide the program administrator with accurate migrant/ESL student enrollment information monthly. 
  8. Participate in the professional learning community and strive to increase knowledge of the curriculum, materials and strategies that are effective for migrant and/or ESL students.
  9. Complete assigned responsibilities within agreed-upon or established timelines and adhere to Van Buren ISD policies and procedures.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned by the program administrator and/or VBISD Superintendent.
