Job Goals:

The primary goal of the TWP Program Assistant is to work with the classroom teacher in carrying out the instructional programming for students in alignment with student IEPs.  TWP is an intensive employment skill building program and students are expected to follow employment expectations of Charles River Labs in Mattawan, MI. Students engage in work rotations in a variety of departments at Charles River. The program assistant role in the Transition to Work Program primarily consists of Job Coaching responsibilities. 

 

Qualifications:

 

Education:

High School Diploma Required. 

 

Work Experience

Previous experience with adults or high school students with disabilities.

Experience with job development and job coaching preferred.

 

Skills:

  • Interest and ability to work with post-secondary (18-26 year old) students with a variety of abilities and disabilities.
  • Ability to coach employment skills in on-the-job settings.
  • Understanding/demonstration of positive behavioral support systems and processes.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work collaboratively with others.
  • Ability to have a growth mindset.
  • Ability to remain objective, calm and neutral in a variety of situations.
  • Direct support and supervision of students in a variety of employment settings.
  • General professional skills, including a willingness to:
    • Make student-centered decisions.
    • Assume positive intentions when working with others.
    • Adhere to federal, state and VBISD policies and procedures.
    • Model VBISD guidelines: Respect, Integrity, Compassion and Excellence. 
    • Complete assigned responsibilities within agreed upon timelines.
    • Perform additional tasks, responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education and the Superintendent.



Essential Job Functions:

  1. Ability to lift 25 pounds.
  2. Ability to transport students across the county (use of VBISD vehicles provided).
  3. Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods as needed for student activities.
  4. Ability to walk 10,000 or more steps/day.



Terms of Employment: As per master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.
