Job Goal(s):

The program instructor’s primary role is the instruction of students in culinary arts 

concepts in a manner consistent with the philosophy and goals of Van Buren Tech. Expectations of the position include organization and planning of instructional delivery that includes curriculum mapping and a lab component, student management and supervision and development of various work based learning opportunities.

 

Qualifications:

 

Education/Certification:

  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with CTE Certification in CIP number 12.0500 (Personal & Culinary Services)

                                                        OR 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Culinary Arts or related field

                                                        OR

  • Eligibility for an Annual Career Authorization (ACA) required (4,000 hours of relevant work experience in the past 10 years)

 

Work Experience:

  •  A demonstrated successful work history in the field of Culinary Arts or a related field.
  • Teaching experience preferred; Experience working with High School students preferred.
  • Experience in restaurant or hotel management.
  • Certified proctor in ServSafe Management Essentials and ServSafe Beverage.

 

Skills:

  • Possess good interpersonal and communication skills. 
  • Student-Focused; Accepts the student as and where they are and strives to establish individual student learning goals.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and interpret/deliver a variety of instructions in written, oral, digital or practicum formats.
  • Ability and desire to work collaboratively and help other staff and students..
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on the needs and abilities of assigned students.
  • Ability to utilize various educational and inventory/purchasing software.
  • Experience working with the business community, service agencies, and educational organizations.
  • Possesses a growth mindset.

 

Essential Job Functions:

 

Curriculum

  1. Develop and operationalize a curriculum designed to achieve the stated goals of the instructor’s assigned program using the State Competencies provided for the  Cooking and Related Culinary Arts CIP code.
  2. Demonstrate continuing progress toward providence by  individualizing the curriculum as needed and staying consistent with Van Buren Tech’s Career Development Model.
  3. Identify and make use of school and community resources which will contribute to the effectiveness of the students' learning experiences.
  4. Organize and meet with a program advisory committee (at least twice per school year).
  5. Develop a work-based learning component providing students with real-world experiences.
  6. Provide opportunities for students to participate in leadership opportunities, including Career & Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs).
  7. Provide opportunities for students to earn State approved certifications or credentials.
  8. Give visiting students an overview of the program, descriptions of jobs and different training opportunities and requirements.
  9. Organize field trips and business industry site visits related to the culinary field.

 

Management and Supervision

  1. Maintain a program inventory control system, including ordering/purchasing.
  2. Manage program budget.
  3. Supervise and instruct the students enrolled in the program during the time period they are in attendance.
  4. Supervise and evaluate intern teachers, if provided.
  5. Collaborate with program assistants, cafe employees, potential employers, advisory committee members and work-based learning placement coordinators to provide catering and work-based learning opportunities for students.
  6. Provide information for student follow-up for school improvement and annual report.
  7. Maintain current gradebook and attendance of enrolled students.
  8. Assess/evaluate students and provide regular feedback.

Terms of Employment: As per master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.
