Job Goal(s):

The primary job goal of the Program Assistant for the Emotionally Impaired is to assist the classroom teacher in planning, preparing, and implementing the instructional program for the Behavioral Education Center students.

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Education:

High School Diploma required

 

Associates degree or completion of two years college equal to 60 semester hours is preferred

  

Work Experience:

Previous experience as a program assistant or experience working with children with emotional or behavioral problems

 

Skills:

  • Possess physical strength and ability to physically manage students requiring physical management/restraint
  • Have the philosophy that all children can learn when provided with the appropriate instruction and that changing student behavior involves teaching them appropriate behaviors and changing our own behavior
  • Possess good mastery of basic academic skills so as to assist students with academic learning
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others and be willing to assist others in other classrooms/situations when needed
  • Be receptive to feedback and pursue continuous improvement of effectiveness and increase achievement of student outcomes
  • Ability and willingness to take direction and constructive criticism and follow through with teacher plans and team decisions
  • Ability to remain objective, calm, and neutral when responding to a student's inappropriate behaviors.
  • Ability to set and maintain behavioral limits in a consistent manner
  • Ability to “actively listen” to students and relate to them in a positive, supportive, and reinforcing manner
  • Willingness to follow through with program behavior management procedures including time out, physical restraint, and after-school detention, which includes staying after school with detained students and transporting them home (with another adult) when necessary

Essential Job Functions:

  • Demonstrate effective instructional behaviors in assisting the teacher in providing instruction.
  • Demonstrate effective classroom and behavior management skills in assisting the teacher in managing student/classroom behavior.
  • Follow teacher direction and written lesson plans in programming as a group and one-on-one basis. 
  • Assist the teacher in classroom preparation for instruction and organization.
  • Assist in monitoring and maintaining records of students’ progress toward objectives.
  • Assist students with personal needs (toileting, dressing, etc.), when needed.
  • Assist in development of procedures and implement and collect data regarding effectiveness.
  • Provide constructive feedback to teachers regarding students, programming, and teacher performance.
  • Communicate effectively with others.
  • Deliver students to appropriate locations, on time, for programming or bus transportation.
  • Participate in IEPTs, parent conferences, screening and staff meetings.
  • Demonstrate ethical handling of confidential student and parent information.
  • Demonstrate reliable attendance and punctuality.
  • Transport students to and from mainstream classes, when necessary.
  • Follow through on assigned responsibilities within agreed upon time lines.
  • Follow Van Buren ISD policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Special Education Supervisor.
  • Regular and reliable, in person attendance

Terms of Employment: As per master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.
